Students completing undergraduate or graduate degrees will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform and teach percussion in the professional world at varying levels. To meet degree requirements, students are expected to show considerable proficiency in all categories listed below: - Snare drum (orchestral and military) - Timpani (orchestral and solo) - Keyboards (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, etc.) - Multiple percussion (including percussion with electronics) - Hand drum (tones, patterns, techniques, and cultural fundamentals) - Drum set (coordination and reading) ## Undergraduate Audition Requirements UNLV Percussion does not establish specific repertoire requirements for entrance at the undergraduate level. However, students are strongly advised to select solo literature that would be appropriate for performance in solo and ensemble festivals, honor band auditions, and the like. Additionally, prospective students can examine the UNLV Percussion [[4.3.0 What are Proficiency Minimums|Proficiency Minimums]] for ideas what to play. **In general:** the student should demonstrate competency in **at least three** of the above six categories to be considered for entrance into [[Applied Study]] Entrance into UNLV Percussion as a _music major_ **is contingent upon auditioning** before the Percussion Coordinator for evaluation. In addition to prepared literature—selected and performed by the student—the Coordinator may request demonstrations of various fundamentals such as: - Scales - Rudiments - Sight reading > [!NOTE] Admission vs Entrance > Admission to UNLV as a university student and Entrance into a Music Major (and the respective instrumental area of study) are two different thresholds. > > Your admission to UNLV (at the university level) is contingent on GPA, and other variables determining admission as a student regardless of intended major or degree path. > > Entrance into the UNLV School of Music through a specific instrumental area is a secondary threshold that is *not* contingent on GPA but on meeting basic fundamental knowledge and playing minimums necessary to study music at the collegiate level. ## Masters Audition Requirements UNLV Percussion does not establish specific repertoire requirements for entrance at the masters level. However, students are strongly advised to select solo literature that would be appropriate for performance in solo Senior Recitals at the collegiate level. Additionally, etudes and literature found in professional orchestra, military, and professional production audition lists are excellent sources from which to pull for preparing repertoire. ## Doctoral Audition Requirements ### Musical Requirements UNLV Percussion does require live, in-person performance demonstrations of a selection from our [[2.3.3 DMA Audition Repertoire List]]. At least one selection from the Snare, Keyboard, and Timpani sections must be prepared.
