# Additional Responsibilities
The UNLV Percussion has built a tradition of innovation and excellence. To be a successful percussionist in our program, organization is key. You should strive to enhance your personal qualities of responsibility, self-management, flexibility, cooperation, and integrity. The following is a list of additional ways that you can contribute to the heritage of our institution:
- Be early to rehearsals and gigs. You have a lot of instruments and implements to prepare long before the downbeat is given. Develop an attitude and a reputation for always being prepared and having your act together. Demonstrate understanding and politeness in group settings.
- Turn in academic assignments early if you are missing a class for an authorized performance, clinic or master class. Let the teachers know well in advance that you have an excused absence for their class and ask for the assignment early so that you can complete it and hand it in before you are absent.
- Organize your time. It is extremely important that all students obtain some type of calendar/planner to keep track of extra scheduled rehearsals, gigs, concerts, tours, etc. Prioritize your work to take care of primary assignments and responsibilities in school. Keep an accurate calendar and never accept a gig without the calendar in hand. Communicate with others if a conflict arises and deal with it immediately and honestly. Compromise is always more amiable if it is reached well in advance of a pending deadline. Keep track of your professional commitments to avoid double bookings.
- Be active in PAS. The Percussive Arts Society is an international organization that focuses on the study and advancement of the art of percussion. It is the professional organization for our field. All percussion majors and minors at UNLV are required to be current members of the Percussive Arts Society. Attending the annual PASIC is an investment in your craft. Internationally recognized artists, clinics, concerts and displays keep you up-to-date and relevant. Save your money and do your best to make this an annual trip!
- Students are encouraged to take as many auditions as possible when professional opportunities arise. However, it is your responsibility to initiate conversation for missing school to take auditions for professional engagements. (i.e., theme parks, military bands, DCI and WGI groups, etc.). Please see the appropriate faculty to request a Departmental Excuse form for consideration of absence from classes.
- Check Slack, your email, and the percussion bulletin board multiple times each day for announcements, rehearsal schedules, upcoming events, and any changes to previously scheduled items. The schedule of percussion events is updated frequently and sometimes untimely changes to the schedule occur. Be familiar with the schedule of concerts you are required to attend and enthusiastic about the opportunities for concerts and events that you have the opportunity to attend.
- Ask permission to borrow equipment that you do not own and do not lend anyone equipment that doesn’t belong to you.
## Personal Responsibility
Students are financially responsible for the music and equipment/instruments they are assigned. Any student who loses assigned music must replace the entire composition or provide an original published version of the lost part/score. Any student who damages instruments that they are using must pay for any damages or replacement of that instrument, depending on the situation – you break it, you buy it.
