# Attendance and Professionalism
Students are expected to attend all percussion-related events unless otherwise noted or excused. These events include but are not limited to:
- [[#Gear Moves & Professional Courtesy |Gear Moves]]
- Fellow percussionists’ recitals
- Guest artist masterclasses
- Grad student and/or faculty-lead masterclasses
- Extracurricular rehearsals (as necessary)
- Percussion Complex cleanup/organization sessions
## Absences and Class Conflicts
Life happens and unexpected absences are inevitable. Likewise, *some* events like gear moves may conflict with your scheduled classes. In these instances, absences **must** be communicated immediately and clearly. Students must notify both the individual leading the event *and* the Coordinator.
Approved forms of communication:
- Email
- Slack Workspace Direct Message
- Personal Text Message (only as a last resort)
Unapproved forms of communication:
- Facebook, Instagram, or other social media messaging
- Communication through another student (even if related to that member)
\*\*Communicating through another student is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Ever.\*\*
## Punctuality
Outside of the expectations dictated by your schedule class syllabi, punctuality to extra-curricular percussion activities is not a matter of question. To be late is to fail yourself and your colleagues. It is expected that the aforementioned communication protocols regarding absences apply similarly to issues of punctuality.
### General Expectations
It is expected that students will be at the location of any UNLV Percussion activity **a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes prior** to the mandated call time.
If a student believes they’ll be late, they must **communicate** their situation to the Coordinator or lead faculty/graduate student when it is safe to do so.
It is expected that students will remain at the location of any UNLV Percussion activity until dismissed by the Coordinator or lead faculty/graduate student.
<u>Excessive failure to adhere to any of the above-mentioned expectations will result in a lowered Applied Lessons grade</u>.
### Work Conflicts
Work conflicts with UNLV Percussion activities will not be tolerated in any way **unless an individual agreement is made with percussion faculty**. All work scheduling and possible conflicts must be addressed between the student and their employer immediately after receipt of calendar events. <u>It is imperative that students work with their employers to understand this commitment</u>
## Repertoire Class (“Grone’s Groove”)
Rep Class (aka “Grone’s Groove”) is a mandatory weekly class meeting for the entire studio. It is the primary component of your Applied Lesson grade and is the weekly activity that unifies our studio. **Attendance and/or punctuality issues with Grone’s Groove will result in a lowered Applied Lesson grade.**
## Masterclasses & Guest Artists
We are fortunate to have numerous guest artists and clinicians visit our campus each year. In fact, our Percussion Area is one of the few programs in the United States that has consistently hosted world-class Artists In Residence without additional cost to our students. Likewise, Graduate and Faculty-led Masterclasses of specialized topics will occur throughout the semester. **These events are mandatory.**
Occasionally, we will have a guest artist or masterclass that occurs with short notice and in these cases, attendance complications will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
## Gear Moves & Professional Courtesy
**All gear moves are considered mandatory events.** These gear moves will be communicated with as much advance notice as possible. All students are expected to contribute to **all** gear moves.
You must stay and help strike the stage after every band, orchestra, or percussion performance – whether you performed or not. It is common courtesy to help tear down and assist in moving equipment after another student<span dir="rtl">’</span>s recital or large ensemble concert. Your colleagues appreciate the help and the post-concert celebration will begin much sooner.
As percussionists, you have 24hr access to one of the largest percussion complexes in the United States and are not required to pay practice room fees, locker fees, instrument rental fees. Thus gear moves are the currency for the wealth of resources our area provides at no additional cost to your college expenses.
**Gear move absences must be communicated to the logistics Graduate Assistant**.
## Dress Code and Demeanor
Students must understand that their time in the UNLV Percussion Program is focused on preparing them for a life as a professional. Appropriate dress, personal hygiene, and interactive skills are essential for participation in any professional setting and the basic standards of those elements are to be maintained.
The following principles apply to all students of the percussion area:
- It is not appropriate to show up to any interaction with faculty, staff, or colleagues without having performed basic, daily hygienic practices (i.e. showered/bathed/cleaned up, brushed teeth, applied deodorant, groomed/combed hair, etc.).
- It is not appropriate to attend classes or functions less than casually dressed or over-dressed. Outfits that are excessively revealing, not suitable for professional interactions, or considered to be a distraction must be avoided.
- If providing a service as a representative of UNLV (attending or helping at events, etc.), "business casual” or "UNLV themed” standards should be met.
- If presenting or performing "dressy casual" should be a minimum standard; ensemble performances have specific dress requirements which must be met; check with the director of those groups for specifics of their dress code.
- Any form of violence, discrimination, harassing, hazing, and/or intimidation will not be tolerated. Students should refer to the UNLV Student Handbook for information regarding the university's policies in these matters.
- If there is ever a question as to the specifications to Percussion Area or UNLV policies, students should contact Dr. Bissantz immediately with any questions.
