# Percussion Complex Policies
## Complex Organization and Instrument Care
All percussionists are responsible for the organization and care of instruments housed in the Complex. Our Percussion Area is proud of extensive range of instruments we can provide for the development of our students. Most of our equipment is of a professional quality and has been maintained meticulously by our faculty, GA’s, and past students for many years. The substantial resources available to you is a substantial privilege, not a right. The following guidelines and expectations are non-negotiable and should be adhered to at all times.
### General Expectations
The following are some of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain our instruments for longevity. However, some of these items can become a point of contention among your peers during a busy and stressful semester. Nonetheless, damage to instruments is more costly than damage to your ego or integrity. If someone leaves an instrument in an unprotected state, put your frustration aside, and care for the instrument. There is no place for passive aggression with covering, uncovering, casing, uncasing, setting up, or tearing down instruments and set ups in the name of care. However, do not be overbearing and incessantly and condescendingly police your peers—it'ss about the instruments, not you. That said, here are the **most important** expectations that everyone must follow:
- All keyboards must be covered when not in use
- No plastic or metal core mallets may be used on UNLV Marimbas unless permitted by a faculty member
- If a drum has a case, it must be returned to its case when not in use
- Multi-percussion setups must be disassembled when not in use unless approved to remain in tact by a faculty member
- Non-percussionists are not allowed to use our equipment unless authorized (e.g., do not invite friends to jam)
- Heads should not be replaced unless checked out via the instrument checkout form
- No brass mallets on glockenspiel or crotales. Ever.
- No instruments may leave campus without faculty permission.
- Timpani, when moved from building to building, should be moved in cases whenever possible
- Non-cased instruments should be wrapped in blankets or padding when moved in carts whenever possible
- If damage to an instrument is noticed or results while in your possession, you **must** notify a grad or the Coordinator
> [!Warning] PLEASE
> this is incredibly important, mistakes will happen. If you break something, you break something, do not allow it to go hidden for someone to find days/months/weeks later
### Friday Clean Up Days
Each Friday at 11:00am, all undergrads and select graduate students will clean and organize the Percussion Complex prior to “Gone's Groove” at 11:30am. This is a *crucial* weekly activity that ensures the integrity of our instruments. Likewise, this is a highly valuable activity for new students to our program, as it familiarizes you with the locations of instruments and supplies stored in the room.
**This is a mandatory weekly activity and attendance will be taken as a part of your applied lessons grade.**
## Personal Equipment
The the Percussion Complex is not a locker room, dorm room, living room, or any form of personal leisure space. While it provides a daily “home base” for percussionists, the Complex will not house your personal accoutrements. Mallet bags, computer bags, purses, backpacks etc. are to be stored in one of the lockers provided.
GA’s have access to the HFA 207 as a means of **modest personal storage** to allow lockers for undergrads.
Students will not be permitted to store their personal equipment about the studio. Practice rooms, behind instruments or in the nooks and crannies of the Complex is unacceptable.
### General Expectations
Students will not store their items in a practice room beyond their active practice in that room
Students will not store their items behind or under instruments, or in the nooks or crannies or corners of the Complex
NO FOOD is allowed in the Complex. Period.
Drinks other than water (e.g., coffee, tea, soda, etc.) will be permitted until there is a spill. Afterwards, water only.
- **Students are liable for any theft or damage of their personal belongings accidentally or purposefully left
in the Complex**
No bicycles in the studio. Small scooters, OneWheels, Skateboards, etc. are permitted but should be stored near the back double doors when possible.
All lockers must have locks and their combinations or spare keys provided to the Coordinator.
**PLEASE NOTE: Lockers are still the property of UNLV and the Percussion Area, we retain the right to access these lockers if necessary. You will not be allowed to have a locker without providing a combination or spare key.**
# The 12 Golden Rules of Percussion
*by Dr. Brian Mason*
1. If you open it, close it.
2. If you turn it on, turn it off.
3. If you unlock it, lock it up.
4. If you break it, admit it.
5. If you can’t fix it, call in someone who can.
6. If you borrow it, return it.
7. If you value it, take care of it.
8. If you make a mess, clean it up.
9. If you move it, put it back.
10. If it belongs to someone else, get permission to use it.
11. If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it alone.
12. If it’s none of your business, don’t ask questions.
