# What are "Program Competencies"
"Program Competencies" represent the specific competency thresholds established by the UNLV School of Music pursuant to [NASM](https://nasm.arts-accredit.org/)(National Association of Schools of Music) [Standard VIII.A.4](https://nasm.arts-accredit.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/02/M-2025-26-Handbook-Final-02-24-2026.pdf), which charges each accredited institution with defining the levels of competency required for graduation.
Each course syllabus will list the program competencies that the course addresses.
## Translation for the Student
NASM is a third-party organization that has standards our School of Music must meet to be considered "legit." Thus, we have to document and clearly outline "what you're going be capable of once you graduate."
## Actual Function
NASM is third-party, non-profit organization that provides "accreditation," which is
> ...the process whereby an association or agency recognizes an institution as having met certain qualifications or standards. In NASM, the process focuses upon two principal concerns: educational quality and institutional probity.
>
> The review of educational quality is made according to nationally recognized standards developed by the Association with the full participation of its member institutions and in consultation with various professional groups in the field of music.
>
> The review of probity is made by determining whether the institution is indeed providing the educational services it says it is offering to the public, and whether its own stated operational procedures are being followed.[^1]
