Below are the skills and competencies the UNLV Percussion Area's curriculum and program structure *intend* to develop across all eight undergraduate semesters.
These outcomes are intentionally **broad and non-instrument specific**. Instrument-specific skills are defined by our [[4.3.0 What are Proficiency Minimums|Proficiency Minimums]], which guide students through progressions that *relate* to these larger outcomes.
### Semesters 1-2 (MUSA 127 & 128)
- Broad understanding of tone quality across snare, timpani, and marimba
- Broad understanding of the physiology of a healthy and musical stroke for all playing surfaces
- A sense of urgency for the development of high-level sight-reading and ear training
- A recognition of expression, musicality, and phraseology through consistent listening and score study
### Semesters 3-4 (MUSA 227, 228)
- A heightened sensitivity to tone quality and historically informed understanding of performance practices and gestures
- A considerable understanding of arm anatomy and stroke physiology from performance and pedagogical perspectives
- A basic to intermediate understanding of harmonic and melodic comping and soloing
- An individualized sense of expression and musicality built upon tone quality and appropriate contextual interpretation
### Semesters 5-8 (MUSA 327, 328, 427, 428)
- A highly developed sense of tone quality and historically informed understanding of performance practices and gestures
- A complete understanding of arm anatomy and stroke physiology from performance and pedagogical perspectives
- An intermediate to advanced understanding of harmonic and melodic comping and soloing
- An individualized sense of expression and musicality built upon tone quality and appropriate contextual interpretation
