# Hearings and Minimums Every recital follows the same core rules. This page covers the requirements shared by all levels. Level-specific minimums live on their own pages: - [[4.6.1 Junior Recitals]] - [[4.6.2 Senior Recitals]] - [[4.6.3 Masters Recitals]] - [[4.6.4 Doctoral Recitals]] These requirements mirror the obligations of producing a public performance as a professional. Meet every deadline to earn permission to perform and a passing grade. ## Scheduling and Location - Finalize your recital date by the first Friday of the semester. - Give your recital within the first ten (10) weeks of the semester. Later dates require faculty approval. - Your recital location defaults to HFA 235 if you choose no other venue. - The "Recital Marimba" is only available in HFA 235. > [!failure] Hard rules > - No Saturday or Sunday recitals. No exceptions. > - Miss the scheduling deadline and a date will be given to you. > - Once finalized, your recital may not be rescheduled for a later date. Only extenuating circumstances, with faculty approval, allow a change. ## Recital Hearing Your Recital Hearing happens at least 14 days before your finalized recital date. It runs 40–60 minutes with faculty. All applied faculty attend. At the hearing you will: - Perform recital repertoire for faculty feedback. - Provide a rough draft of your Program and Program Notes for review. > [!Warning] The hearing is a gate > Faculty determine at the hearing whether your preparation and program are sufficient for the scheduled date. ## Deliverables The following items are due to the Recital Coordinator one week before your Recital Hearing: - Recital Program - Program Notes - Stage Plot - Recital Poster — no template; no changes to design after approval - Recital PowerPoint/Slideshow (for livestream) Templates for everything except the poster are available on Slack or by email. ## Production Scope Recitals are degree milestone assessments. Faculty evaluate your musical and technical development. Production elements beyond your direct artistic execution are outside the assessment. This includes theatrical lighting, projection, non-musical performers, non-standard set construction, and externally funded production design. Faculty may require you to modify any production element that obscures evaluation or creates inequitable conditions across the student body. Demonstrate all production plans by your Recital Hearing and receive written approval. > [!failure] No approval, no recital > Recitals that do not conform to faculty-approved production scope will not receive program approval to proceed. ## Changing or Cancelling a Recital Date If you or the faculty deem you unprepared for your finalized date, the recital is cancelled. No rescheduling for later dates. Only extenuating circumstances warrant a date change. These are serious life events beyond your control that would prevent the recital or put you in unhealthy circumstances. If one arises, you and the faculty will find a solution together. All Percussion Area peers are released from mandatory attendance if a recital is rescheduled.
