# Doctoral Recital Requirements
Courses: [[MUS 798B - Recital-Doctoral Level|MUS 798B]] (performance recitals) and [[MUS 781 - DMA Lecture-Recital|MUS 781]] (lecture recital). Shared rules for all recitals: [[4.6.0 Hearings and Minimums]].
Doctoral students complete four total recitals: three performance recitals and one lecture recital.

> Confirm your Advisory Committee through Grad Rebel Gateway before scheduling any doctoral recital. No recital may occur without this committee established and notified of the recitals for their attendance.
## Qualifying Recital (Recital #1)
### Minimum Requirements
**Duration:**
- 45–55 minutes of music, minimum.
- 60 minutes total runtime, maximum.
**Repertoire:**
- A solo recital, diverse in nature, demonstrating your musical individuality and most-developed skills.
- Include Concert Snare Drum, Marimba, Timpani, and Multiple Percussion at minimum.
- Substitutions are allowed if they best demonstrate your abilities.
**Added performers:**
- Added performers may not be the *feature* of any work.
- This is a solo recital: no more than 25 minutes of music may contain added musicians.
### Hearing Requirements
- Your hearing happens at least 14 days before your recital date.
- It runs 40–60 minutes with faculty. All applied faculty attend.
- Perform your recital repertoire for feedback.
- Bring a rough draft of your Program and Program Notes.

### Program Note Requirements
- Write your own program notes. Copied notes are unacceptable.
- Format the program and notes professionally for your audience.
- Rough drafts are reviewed at your Recital Hearing.
- Final documents are due to the Recital Coordinator one week before your hearing.
- Templates are available on Slack or by email.
### Scheduling and Logistics
- Finalize your date by the first Friday of the semester, or a date will be given to you.
- Perform within the first ten (10) weeks of the semester. Later dates require faculty approval.
- No Saturday or Sunday recitals. No exceptions.
- No rescheduling once finalized. Only extenuating circumstances, with faculty approval, allow a change.
- Location defaults to HFA 235. The "Recital Marimba" is only available in HFA 235.
- Deliverables due one week before your hearing: Recital Program, Program Notes, Stage Plot, Recital Poster (no design changes after approval), Recital PowerPoint/Slideshow.
### Production Content
- Your recital assesses your musical and technical development.
- Production beyond your direct artistic execution is outside the assessment: theatrical lighting, projection, non-musical performers, non-standard sets, externally funded design.
- Faculty may require changes to any element that obscures evaluation or creates inequitable conditions.

## Chamber Recital (Recital #2)
### Minimum Requirements
**Duration:**
- 45–55 minutes of music, minimum.
- 60 minutes total runtime, maximum.
**Repertoire:**
- Program challenging chamber music that advances your chamber performance and coordination skills.
- Works may include pieces of historical importance, extreme technical proficiency, and/or new compositions.
- No work may feature any performer as a prescribed soloist. All musicians must play equal compositional roles.
- Demonstrate your playing strengths across different instruments for each work. Programming all works on only one instrument each is unacceptable.
- Instrumentation may be as diverse as desired. Works entirely for percussion are applicable but not required.
- Including other instrument families, such as winds and strings, is encouraged for variety and rigor.
**Duos:**
- The School of Music does not generally consider duo works an ensemble.
- Any intended duo work needs approval and must demonstrate the need for both musicians to work together with a high level of ensemble qualities.

- Present a culmination of your development as a Doctoral Candidate at UNLV.
- Showcase your strengths and musical identity to the highest degree possible.
- There are no fixed instrumentation or repertoire requirements.
- You may focus on a singular instrument, genre, or theme.
- Solos, duos, ensembles, and other configurations are all permissible.
- The program must be professional and fit within the scope of an academic recital.

## Lecture Recital (Recital #4)
### Minimum Requirements
**Duration:**
- 45 minutes of *lecture information*, minimum.
- 10–15 minutes for questions.
- 55-60 minutes total runtime.
**Content:**
- The lecture is based on your DMA Document.
- Deliver it as a keynote presentation that highlights you as an expert in your field of research.
- Performance elements are allowed, but only to support the presentation.
- Use current technology (e.g., videos, slide decks), clearly articulated points, and a professional handout to support the lecture.

- It runs 40–60 minutes with faculty. All applied faculty attend.
