The performance is given after completion of the necessary prerequisite levels of Applied Lessons. The Masters Recital is the degree-milestone recital for Master of Music students in Percussion. ## Course Prerequisite(s) Concurrent enrollment in MUSA 661S and MUS 698. Open to Masters students majoring in Percussion. Completion of the prerequisite levels of Applied Lessons. ## Course Rationale Recitals are degree milestone assessments evaluated on the performer's musical and technical development. The course requirements are meant to resemble the real-world requirements and obligations to realize a successful public performance as an industry professional: repertoire prepared on deadline, logistics coordinated, printed materials produced, and the performance promoted. ## [[4.1.0 What are Program Competencies?|Program Competencies]] **[[4.1.2 MM Competencies|MM Competencies]]:** - Demonstrate advanced proficiency in performance, showcasing technical skill, expressiveness, and interpretive depth in solo, chamber, and ensemble settings at a professional level. - Interpret and perform a core body of repertoire appropriate to their performance medium. - Collaborate effectively with musicians, educators, and composers, communicating ideas clearly in oral and written formats to foster artistic and scholarly exchange. ## Course Competencies - Scheduling, documents, and logistical obligations met by their prescribed due dates - Repertoire thoroughly prepared by the prescribed Recital Hearing date - Program notes and supporting printed materials individually prepared (i.e., not overtly copied) and formatted professionally for the audience - Performance demonstrates informed stylistic understanding, a thoughtful approach to percussion performance practice, and professional stage etiquette ## Learning Outcomes/Course Objectives 1. Prepare a thoughtfully programmed performance that best demonstrates the skills and musical individuality of the student. 2. Plan and organize additional musicians (if applicable). 3. Prepare printed programs and program notes formatted professionally for the audience. 4. Design a recital poster and various promotional media for the recital. ## Required Material No text purchase is required. Templates for the Recital Program, Program Notes, Stage Plot, and Recital PowerPoint/Slideshow will be made available on Slack or by email. ## Evaluation Methods Students are assessed qualitatively on the four areas listed under Course Competencies. The Recital Hearing serves as the gateway assessment: faculty determine whether preparation and program are sufficient for the scheduled recital date. See [[#Grading Policy]] for the qualitative scale. ## Course Requirements The following requirements must be met by the times set forth below to be given permission to perform and earn a passing grade. These requirements are meant to resemble the real-world requirements and obligations to realize a successful public performance as an industry professional. ### Scheduling & Location Your recital date **must** be finalized by the first Friday of the semester. *Failure to schedule by this deadline will result in a date given to you.* Your recital must be given within the first ten (10) weeks of the semester. *Recitals scheduled after the 10th week are at the discretion of faculty approval.* Your recital may not be scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday. *No exceptions.* Your recital **may not be rescheduled** for a later date once finalized. *Only extenuating circumstances may allow rescheduling with faculty approval.* Your recital location will default to HFA 235 if no other location is chosen. *The "Recital Marimba" will not be available for venues other than HFA 235.* ### Recital Hearing Recital Hearings are held (at minimum) 14 days before your finalized recital date. The duration can be anywhere from **40–60 minutes** with faculty. **All applied faculty must attend your Recital Hearing.** - You will perform recital repertoire for faculty feedback. - You will provide a rough draft of your Program and Program Notes for review. - Faculty will determine if preparation/program is sufficient for the scheduled date. ### Programmatic Elements & Performance Practice All recitals are degree milestone assessments evaluated on the performer's musical and technical development. Production elements—including but not limited to theatrical lighting, projection, non-musical performers, non-standard set construction, and externally funded production design—that exceed the performer's direct artistic execution are outside the scope of this assessment. The percussion faculty reserve the right to require modification of any production element deemed to obscure evaluative clarity or to create inequitable presentation conditions across the student body. Recitals that do not conform to faculty-approved production scope will not receive program approval to proceed. All production plans must be demonstrated by or before the Recital Hearing review and receive written approval. ### Changing a Recital Date In the event the faculty or student deems themselves unprepared for their finalized recital date, the recital will be cancelled. No rescheduling for later dates is allowed. Only extenuating circumstances may warrant a change of date. Such circumstances are likely serious life events or complications which would prevent the recital from occurring or put the student in unhealthy circumstances out of their control. If such an event or circumstances arise, the student and faculty will find a solution. *All Percussion Area peers are released from mandatory attendance if a recital is rescheduled.* ### Planning • Printing • Promotion The following items are due to the Recital Coordinator one week before your Recital Hearing. *Templates for the following will be made available on Slack or by email.* - Recital Program - Program Notes - Stage Plot - Recital Poster *(no template — no changes to design after approval)* - Recital PowerPoint/Slideshow (for livestream) ### Masters Recital Requirements **Applicable students:** Masters students currently enrolled in MUSA 661S and MUS 698 majoring in Percussion. **Minimum Length:** 45–55 minutes of music, maximum recital runtime of 60 minutes. **Repertoire Requirements:** The student must demonstrate a diverse selection of instruments that demonstrates their unique musical abilities. Minimum inclusion of Concert Snare Drum, Marimba, Timpani, and Multiple Percussion is expected, but additional instrumentation is encouraged. If the student adds additional performers, these performers may not be the *feature* of the work. Clarify programming and instrumentation decisions with your Applied Lessons instructor.
