# What is "applied study"
Applied Study (or "Applied Lessons") is the term used for **private lessons courses that count towards degree completion in a music major.**
In some cases, students may audition and not be proficient enough to begin an actual music major workload. Thus, they will be enrolled in "non-applied lessons."
Non-applied lessons are designed for both remediation to get students up to speed *and* for students who are non-majors who just wish to study percussion without the additional requirements of Applied Lessons.
Applied Lessons require completion of Jury Exams, meeting [[4.3.0 What are Proficiency Minimums|proficiency minimums]], and participating in *all* UNLV Percussion activities and events.
In most cases, knowing the difference between "applied" and "non-applied" lessons will not apply to most students.
## Cases involving "non-applied" study
### Non-music majors
Non-applied lessons are primarily for students wishing to engage in a weekly private lesson with a music faculty in order to learn and develop their skills but without the extra requirements expected of a music major.
### Remediation for incoming students
Some students wishing to major in music may not be deemed ready for Applied Study immediately upon admission to UNLV. Thus, students in this scenario are placed in a "[[Pre-Music Major]]" and into non-applied percussion lessons in order to gather the minimum competencies needed to successfully navigate the beginning of a music degree.
